The earliest peer group on the Nissan Sentra was introduced in the United States in May 1982 as a direct renewal intended the Datsun 210.[3] Initially the model was imported from Japan, where it was produced at Zama plant.[2] Available in four build styles (two-door sedan, four-door sedan, five-door wagon including three-door hatchback coupe), it was the following car to be present marketed in the United States below the nameplate on Nissan including using a model name instead on a number. The earliest one was the Nissan Stanza, introduced in the 1981 New York Auto Show as a 1982 model. While former Sunny models had second-hand a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, the B11 Sentra was the earliest to use a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. Engine range was the 67 hp (50 kW) (E15) 1.5 L four-cylinder SOHC,[4] replacing the old A-Series OHV. This presented semi-hemispherical combustion chambers, high-swirl intake ports including a semi-dual exhaust manifold to provide strong torque at little including medium rpm ranges. Torque peak was 85 lb⋅ft (115 N⋅m) at 3200 rpm. Transmission options were a four-speed manual, 5-speed manual or a three-speed robot with lock-up torque converter. Drag coefficient was 0.39 intended the coupe including 0.40 intended two- including four-door sedans.[4]
At the period on its release, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gave the Sentra MPG the highest gasoline mileage with gasoline powered cars sold at that time, 43 miles per gallon in metropolis including 58 miles per gallon in highway, a combined 48 miles per gallon.[5] Curb heaviness on one 1875 pounds helped it to achieve that number. The Sentra MPG was a exceptional configuration that presented a three-way exhaust catalyst including an electronically controlled oil metering whole to monitor the air-fuel mix automatically including cause adjustments to increase oil mileage.[6]
Trim levels were standard, Deluxe including XE, while price range were among US$4,949 intended the bottom two-door sedan up to US$6,899 intended the two-door XE hatchback coupe. Standard equipment summit of|supported by} all models were four-wheel independent suspension, head circle brakes including back drums, rack including pinion steering, maintenance free battery, back ashtray including container seats. Deluxe models added halogen headlamps, remote-locking gas filler door, carpeted stem including back wiper-washer summit of|supported by} the wagon. Deluxe including XE offered tinted glass, trip odometer, vanity mirror, dual far mirrors including opening trim. XE offered cut heap carpeting, analogue quartz clock, far back aperture opener, low-fuel warning light, AM-FM Clarion stereo radio, control steering, tachometer including 155/13 whitewall radial tires.[5] Sunroof was accessible as an option.
The Sentra quickly became a success, partly due to the appeal on little oil consumption. In its earliest year on sales, it was already the best-selling buy in in the U.S. including the fourth best-selling passenger car total (together with the before 210), with 191,312 units sold on both cars.[7] The Sentra ended the 1983 year as the eighth-most sold passenger car, with 209,889 units.[8]
The 1983 model-year introduced a 1.7 L CD17 I4 diesel engine, mated with a four-speed manual transmission. Also, the 1.5 L was replaced through a 69 hp (51 kW) 1.6 L E16 as the grade engine, accessible with a five-speed manual or three-speed automatic. Later that year the Sentra also received an electronically controlled carburetor.[9]
In April 1985, Nissan started production on the Sentra in the Smyrna, Tennessee plant, after a US$85 million investment.[2] The 1985 model-year received lesser exterior changes: aerodynamically styled headlamps, a new grille including blackwall tires replaced the old whitewall tires. A speedy SE option was introduced. The SE was one accessible in the two-door hatchback model including included alloy wheels, raven subordinate build paint including raven away grille. Also, robot spread was voluntary summit of|supported by} all Sentras apart from two-door bottom sedan, MPG Diesel including SE coupe. Prices were starting at US$5,499.[10] The diesel machine was stopped in the U.S. mart soon thereafter. Consumer Reports magazine ranked the B11 reliability as "better than average" in 1985.[11]
Regarding the safety on the B11 model, it was ranked the seventh safest car in a rank made through the Center intended Auto Safety in 1983, which examined the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) testing, consisting on frontal crashes at 35 miles per hour.[12]
In Mexico it was called the Nissan Tsuru, individual the earliest car christened as Nissan in this country. Also, the three-door hatchback coupé was known as the Nissan Tsuru Samurai. For 1986, the 1.5 L machine was replaced through the 1.6 L including intended 1987 the Tsuru Samurai received a speedy form called the Nissan Ninja Turbo which included a little increase turbocharger with carburator including prominent Ninja stickers summit of|supported by} the little side on the doors.[citation needed] The regular Sunny Coupé was also sold as the "Nissan Ninja" in 1987, equipped with the 80 hp (60 kW) E16S while the locally developed turbocharged form on that machine (E16T) with 93 hp (69 kW).
